Student Thoughts...... What are some of your learners thoughts?

Readaloud  Isabella

In Readaloud we have been doing a twitter chat. It is a time where we can connect and ask the author questions. Annual 2 is the book we are reading. It is a lot different from the other books we have read in the past. I have been finding the Readaloud super fun.

Reflection Zane

This week in #NZreadaloud we to a new story in the book we are doing. The book is called Annual2 and features a bunch of stories from NZ authors. We got a poster that had a lot of NZ biscuits and slices. All of the treats on that poster had made-up latin names. (e.g. shrewsbury → lickalda jamoffit, and the anzac biscuit → lestwee forgetum) My favourite made-up name on that poster would have to be the raisin biscuit → deceptus terribloides. We had a tweetdeck with Giselle Clarkson, the person who drew that poster. The poster is a ‘spoof’ of the New Zealand Commercial Fish Species poster that can be seen in some fish and chip shops. She even made her own version.

Readaloud:

Our class did a twitter chat with the author from our new read aloud text, Annual 2. Bella and I said how we like the text so far as it is a lot different than any other text we have read before in our class. I am excited to learn and read more from the text this term.

  1. Hi Isabella it is Kerri here. I would love you to tell me WHY you think #NZreadaloud is super fun? What is it that makes it fun for you? How is it different to a regular 'read aloud'? Is it different? In what way?

  2. Hi 'Bella and I' it is Kerri here. Did you get a surprise that the 'text' we were using was a poster? Did you think we could do much learning from a poster? What did you learn about 'posters'?

    1. Hello Kerri, my name is Bella and I am from Rongokako. I appreciate that you took the time to answer my post. I think #NZreadaloud is super fun because it give s me a chance to connect with the author and characters, images and language. I also like how we get to connect with other people who are reading the same text. I like that Mrs Howard reads the text so I don't have to worry about reading the words myself. A read aloud where the teacher just reads without talking about the text makes me sad because I find it hard to understand so that is why I like Mrs Howard reading us the text. I like that we look at new words and get to talk about what is happening in the stories. #NZreadaloud is different because we actually talk about the text and we talk to other people about what we understand the text is saying. I find normal reading hard but I love readaloud because I can draw pictures in my mind and Miss and the class help me to understand what is happening. I like researching the new ideas and different things that come up in the story to. Yeah, #NZreadaloud is super fun!

  3. Hello Kerri, I am Bella and I am from Rongokako. I want to thank you for you comments about my reflection. I did get a surprise that the text was in a poster format because I thought text is usually about words/language. I like art and so this poster spoke to me with the awesome choice of colours and placement of the biscuits. I learnt that posters can be looked upon as visual texts and that you can make them funny and still send a message. What part of the text did you like best and why?
